How Do I Choose the Right Agency?

Consider the following when considering a home health care provider:

  • Is the agency Medicare-certified? That means it is approved to provide services to patients with Medicare.
  • Does the agency offer the specific health care services the patient needs (i.e., physical therapy or infusion)?
  • Does the agency meet special needs such as language preferences?
  • Does the agency offer the personal care services the patient needs like assistance with bathing, dressing and using the bathroom?
  • Does the agency have the staff available to provide the type and hours of care as prescribed by the physician? And can they start when you need them?
  • Does the hospital discharge planner, doctor or social worker recommend the agency?
  • Does the agency have the staff available at night and on weekends for emergencies?

For all of the above, the answer is "Yes" with the VNA.

If you and your physician decide that home health care is needed, you have a choice of utilizing any of the participating Medicare-certified home health agencies that serve your geographic area. You can visit with your physician, hospital discharge planner, or other referring agency to determine which agency would best meet your needs. In addition, you can access additional information from Home Health Compare, along with other information you gather, as you decide where to get the home health services you need.
